This section provides sources of funding, training and information available on the internet. Though the sheer volume of information may be daunting, we encourage you to run searches of your own in addition to using these resources.

This list is by no means comprehensive; we simply have highlighted some sources we believe will be helpful. Additional information is added to the web everyday so be persistent in your searches.

The list of grant providers below includes likely sources (not prioritized) for resources based on the following criteria:

  • Specific application to the four WW2BW themes (Environmentally Sound Marine Transportation, Ecosystems-Based Management, Sustainable Tourism and Integrated Watershed Management)
  • Resources available in the Wider Caribbean/WW2BW regions
  • Willingness to work with NGOs
  • Recently active grants or applications
  • Willingness to entertain proposals and provide resources.

NGO Organization and Management

Who: Foundation Center http://foundationcenter.org/gainknowledge/

What: The website has short courses and tutorials on grant writing, making a budget and non-profit management in general.
Where: This is not a region-specific organization. Most materials are available in English, Spanish and French.
Interests: Encouraging philanthropy.

Who: UNDP Capacity Building http://capacity.undp.org/
What: The website provides information on networks for capacity building as well as tools and resources.
Where: The material is not region specific; however, if you are looking for such information, the library is divided into regional categories. http://capacity.undp.org/index.cfm?module=Library&page=Library
Interests: The organization seeks to promote partnerships and capacity building in the developing world.

Software Tools

Who: Connexions http://cnx.org/
What: A website that allows teachers to create online-based course "modules" easily and for free. The software is all contained on the website and there is a training course.
Where: The website is not region specific.
Interests: All courses created through the website become licensed under the creative commons, meaning everyone can use them. So, search for content that interests you and create your own courses.

Who: Zoho Writer http://www.zohowriter.com/login.sas
What: A free online word processor for those who do not wish to purchase Microsoft Office. Documents can be shared and edited between multiple users and can be downloaded into MS Word format for easy compatibility.
Where: Not region specific.|
Interests: To provide a free tool for people to use anytime, anywhere.

Who: OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org
What: A free, open-source suite of tools (akin to MS Office), including word processing, spreadsheet, database, image and presentation software that you can download and use on your computer. Files are compatible with MS Office, so sharing between people is easy.
Where: Not region specific.
Interests: Providing an alternative to MS Office.

Online Teaching Tools and Educational Grants

Who: National Geographic Society http://www.nationalgeographic.com/about/index.html
What: The society offers teaching resources, grants and training for educators around the world. The society awards grants for scientific field research and exploration through its Committee for Research and Exploration.
Where: Not region specific.
Interests: To promote exploration and conservation through education.

Who: American Association of Geographers http://www.aag.org/Grantsawards/index.cfm
What: The grants support research and travel to the United States for training in geography. There are also tips for receiving funding.
Where: Not region specific. However, you should check to see if you are eligible as different awards have different requirements.
Interests: A scientific and educational society that promotes the field of geography.

Who: United Nations University Online Learning Center http://www.onlinelearning.unu.edu/
What: Working with a multitude of partners, UNU focuses on science and technology education for the developing world.
Where: Course materials are not targeted to a specific region, but they do deal mostly with the developing world.
Interests: Introducing people to cutting-edge science and technology in a free and open format.

Who: Microsoft Office http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010349101033.aspx
What: Instructions on how to make a lesson plan easily in Microsoft Word.
Where: Not region specific.
Interests: Using a common word processor to make a lesson plan. This will facilitate the sharing and archiving of such plans as well.

Who: Teachnology http://www.teach-nology.com/web_tools/
What: A website to provide teachers with the tools, resources and information they need to be effective teachers.
Where: Not region specific; most tools do assume you have use of a computer.
Interests: Providing free resources for teachers.

Scholarships

Who: Institute of International Education http://www.iie.org/
What: The website provides details on the programs and applications offered by IIE.
Where: Students from over 170 nations have participated. The program brings students to the United States and sends US students abroad.
Interests: To facilitate cultural and informational exchange.

Who: World Wildlife Fund http://www.wwf-efn.org/
What: The organization provides scholarships and short-term grants to support leaders of conservation efforts.
Where: There are many programs offered, each with different eligibility requirements. Be sure to look carefully to see which programs you qualify for.
Interests: The education scholarship program's goal is to give those already involved in conservation greater understanding to further their cause.

Article Databases and Technical Training

Who: oneFish http://www.onefish.org/global/index.jsp
What:  A website to organize and easily display the various resources available to those in the fisheries research and development area. The site lists previous grants that organizations have received as well as news feeds.
Where: The site is organized by research areas rather than regions.
Interests: To provide those in the field with all the resources they need to be in the know about fisheries research.

Who: Development Gateway http://www.developmentgateway.org/
What: A comprehensive website featuring a library, grant search and other features to aid development.
Where: The site is not region specific, but there are links through which you can narrow the focus onto a specific region.
Interests: To use the internet to aid developing nations.

Who: EPA Watershed Academy http://www.epa.gov/owow/watershed/wacademy/
What: More then 50 free self-taught courses on various aspects of watershed management. There is also a certification program for those who complete 15 core courses.
Where: The courses do not have a regional focus. However, the law section does revolve around U.S. laws.
Interests: To provide information and training to encourage stewardship and understanding of watersheds.

Grant Providers

Note: Please be sure to check the eligibility details carefully, as some have strict requirements as to topics, regions, type of organization, location of organization, citizenship, etc.

Who: European Union Countries
What: Contact the embassies of EU countries in your action area to see if they have programs in your region.
Where: Embassies outside your area will probably not be interested in funding your projects.
Interests: Local project funding.

Who: U.S. Grant Programs http://www.usgrants.gov
What: Several agencies have ongoing grants programs.
Where: Be sure to check and see if grants from non-US based entities are eligible. Remember that Caribbean means Florida and the US Caribbean territories, not necessarily all the Caribbean, so confirm eligibility.
Interests: To provide various sources of funding for various activities.

Who: National Fish and Wildlife Fund http://www.nfwf.org/programs/coral_funding
What: The NFWF Anchors Away! Coral Reef Conservation Partnership provides matching funds for coral reef preservation projects and has strict requirements on the methods of the project.
Where: The grants are focused in the Gulf of Mexico and the Wider Caribbean.
Interests: To promote the preservation and restoration of coral reefs.

Who: NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program http://www.coralreef.noaa.gov/grants.html
What:  The program aims to promote watershed management and training in developing nations.
Where: The program operates in the Wider Caribbean, Brazil, Bermuda, East Africa, the South Pacific
and Southeast Asia.
Interests: There are four focus categories: watershed management, capacity building, marine protected areas, and socio-economic monitoring.

Who: US Fish and Wildlife Service, International Affairs http://www.fws.gov/international/grants/grants.html
What: The program has grants for marine turtle and neotropical bird conservation.
Where: The programs are based on type of wildlife protected rather than region.
Interests: To promote conservation education and practice in the developing world.

Who: Reef Ball Foundation http://www.reefball.org/grantpro.htm
What: The organization has several grant programs to promote and initiate reefs.
Where: The programs are not region specific.
Interests: To use reef ball molds to restore and build coral reefs in delicate ecosystems.

Who: Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme http://sgp.undp.org/
What: A small grants program in over 60 countries.
Where: The programs are not region specific; be sure to use their eligibility checker to see if you qualify.
Interests: To increase environmental protection through community-based approaches.

Who: Food and Agricultural Organization's Technical Cooperation Programme http://www.fao.org/tc/tcp/index_en.asp
What: The program uses small grants to address forestry, agricultural or fishery problems.
Where: The grants are only available in FAO member nations.
Interests: To convey FAO's technical expertise to a local level.

Who: New England Biolabs Foundation http://www.nebf.org/index.html
What: The website has links to the various areas and types of projects which the foundation funds in the areas of environment, education, science and grassroots movements.
Where: The program operates in the Caribbean and Latin America, but not Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama or Brazil. There are specific project types for each region, so be sure to check if you are eligible.
Interests: To support projects where a small amount of money can have a big impact on communities and their environments.

Who: Caribbean Development Bank Projects and Programmes http://www.caribank.org/
What: Programs supported by the bank aim to reduce poverty through economic and social development.
Where: The programs are limited to the Caribbean.
Interests: The bank funds projects in the following areas: pipelines, basic needs, natural hazards and technical training.

Who: Canada Fund for Local Initiatives http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/latinamerica/barbados/development/dev-en.asp
What: As part of the Canadian Agency for International Development, this fund supports voluntary agencies and communities completing small-scale, sustainable projects.
Where: The Canada Fund provides assistance to Barbados and the OECS countries.
Interests: To support income-earning activities that improve socio-economic welfare using local resources.

Who: British High Commission Foreign and Commonwealth Office Global Opportunities Fund

What: The Sustainable Development Programme supports UK priorities in the developing world through improved governance.
Where: Target countries include Argentina, Brazil, Caribbean Region, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.
Interests: The focus is on transparency, information, participation and access to justice, environmental governance, natural resource management, sustainable forest management, biodiversity and sustainable tourism.

Who: Global Conservation Fund at Conservation International http://www.conservation.org/xp/CIWEB/programs/funding/
What: GCF funds finance the creation, expansion and long-term management of protected areas in the world's biodiversity hotspots, wilderness areas and important marine regions (notably coral reef hotspots).
Where: Not region specific.
Interests: Three types of grants are issued: planning/strategy development grants, project implementation grants and long-term financing for protected areas.

Who: Critical Ecosystems Partnership Fund http://www.cepf.net/xp/cepf/about_cepf/index.xml
What:  CEPF provides strategic assistance to NGOs, community groups and other civil society partners to help safeguard biodiversity hotspots.
Where: CEPF focuses on hotspots in the developing world and strategically targets priority areas in the hotspots for maximum impact.
Interests: Each grant awarded helps implement region-specific strategies developed together with stakeholders, ensuring action toward a common vision.

Who: UNESCO Participation Programme http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=14039&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html
What: Assistance under the Participation Programme is provided to Member States or Associate Member States upon requests submitted through National Commissions (requests from individuals cannot be entertained). International NGOs may also benefit from assistance under the Participation Programme.
Where: Contact your National Commission to UNESCO at Ministries of Education in each member country.
Interests: The UNESCO Participation Programme provides direct assistance to initiatives undertaken by Member States in the organization's fields of competence, in line with the priorities that they themselves determine.

Who: Overseas Territories Environment Programme http://www.ukotcf.org/OTEP/index.htm
What:  OTEP supports the implementation of the Environment Charters and environmental management more generally in the UK Overseas Territories. Projects proposed must contribute to the implementation of the Overseas Territories Environment Charters.
Where: UK Overseas Territories.
Interests: Greater quality of life and livelihood for the UK Overseas Territories through the sustainable use and protection of natural resources.

Who: Commonwealth Foundation http://www.commonwealthfoundation.com/civil/programmes/
What: The foundation's responsive grants enable people from the Commonwealth to participate in short training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences and study visits in other Commonwealth countries.
Where: All grant applications should look at the foundation's mission and priority areas of interest.
Interests: The foundation targets activities that strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations in their work on poverty eradication, good governance and sustainable development.

Who: MacArthur Foundation

What: The grantmaking area is dedicated to conserving biodiversity, enhancing knowledge of how to use natural resources sustainably over the long term, and ensuring that those living in or near sensitive areas benefit from conservation efforts. The next two rounds of grants in the Caribbean will be made in 2007 and 2010.
Where: Work is supported in a small number of tropical biogeographic zones, chosen for their richness of species diversity, endemism, limited institutional capacity and level of threat. The two grant programs have different regions of focus. Conserving Priority Landscapes grants focus on areas in the Greater Antilles - Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola - that have global conservation importance. Building Conservation Capacity grants will strengthen the technical and institutional capacity for sustained conservation in the Greater Antilles or Insular Caribbean.
Interests: The central goal of the foundation's grantmaking in the Insular Caribbean is to strengthen conditions for sustained conservation of biodiversity. Additionally the foundation seeks to maintain ecosystem processes and, where possible, evolutionary options.

Who: Food and Agriculture Organization National Forest Programme Facility

What: The FAO National Forest Programme Facility provides direct country-level financial and technical support to partner countries to advance implementation of their national forest programs.
Where: Jamaica and other English-speaking Caribbean countries.
Interests: Community forestry management initiatives are especially encouraged.

Who: Food and Agriculture Organization Telefood Programme http://www.fao.org/food/english/index.html 
What: The program provides direct assistance to groups of small-scale farmers, fishermen, herders or local institutions such as schools and health centers, in the launching of new food production and income-generating activities.
Where: Not region specific.
Interests: TeleFood funds must be used for the provision of physical inputs such as seeds, starter livestock, feed, fertilizers, hand tools, field supplies, building materials and small, non-motorized equipment.

Who: Environmental Foundation of Jamaica http://www.efj.org.jm/ 
What: Organizations of civil society with mandates in the targeted areas of environment and children are eligible for support.
Where: Limited to projects in Jamaica.
Interests: The Environmental Foundation of Jamaica is an independent foundation that uses the proceeds from a creative debt-swap arrangement with the United States to promote sustainable development in Jamaica.

Who: AVINA http://www.avina.net/web/avinawebsite.nsf/page?openform 
What: AVINA aims to facilitate partnerships and linkages between civil and private society to increase sustainable development in Latin America.
Where: The projects funded are limited to Latin America.
Interests: Projects funded operate in four areas: equity, democratic governance and rule of law, sustainable economic development, and conservation and natural resources management.
