May 31, 2007Madagascar's First Community-run Marine Protected Area

May 31, 2007: In 2004, the community of Andavadoaka, Madagascar created a multi-stakeholder partnership to combat coral reef and marine life degradation, while preserving the livelihood of the local community. Madagascar's first experimental community-run Marine Protected Area partnership, comprised of NGOs, research institutes, a fish export company, and local fishermen, is implementing a regenerative "no-take zone," devising strategies for marine conservation, and building the foundation for eco-tourism. Since winning the Seed Award in 2005, the partnership has implemented a marine protected area that has allowed fish stocks to replenish and diversify. The increased sustainability and productivity of fisheries has led three additional neighboring communities to request that the protected area include their fishing grounds. More information about the Equator Prize 2006 winners is available on the United Nations Development Program site.
